"When deep down inside the flame ignites, we light the way from inside." Life's Mountaineers Journeys Unlimited is now in its third decade of adventure travel. The journeys grew out of physician training in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota in 1980. The goal at that time was to facilitate “affective development” in physicians—today referred to as emotional intelligence. What we learned then, and is as relevant today, is that these cross cultural journeys foster self awareness, risk taking and understanding of our global citizenship. Our early journeys included sailing, rafting, backpacking, winter camping, and dog sledding. Our research showed that our journeys led to increased self esteem and self trust. With our Outward Bound trained staff, we were able to translate the metaphors of these adventures into everyday living. We then journeyed forth with cross cultural journeys: Bicycling in China, hiking and sailing in Greece, trekking Tibet and Bhutan, trekking in the Caucasus of the former Soviet Union, hiking Peru’s Inca Trail, walking safaris with the Maasai of East Africa, and mountain climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Through these journeys we have literally and symbolically faced our “edges” - recognizing that when we meet another culture, we meet a group, and we meet ourselves. Socrates said it well: “May the inner and outer be as one.” Many Journey participants have stated that while the actual cross cultural journeys last a matter of weeks, the experience lives on forever.
